  • Information and help for volunteering in Ghana.

After coming to Ghana as a volunteer I soon realised that most of the money I had paid to an organisation hadn't left England. In fact the disabled centre where I was working was losing money from having to pay for my meals and accomodation. I also realised how easy it is to volunteer in Ghana without any established organisation, which would allow you to spend the extra money on helping develop the project you are working on.

On this site you can find advice and help about going to volunteer in Ghana.

Hey Malte,

my struggle through the jungle of organisations has come to an end =)

You’re my hero!!!

My name is Christine, I am 19 and come from Rostock. I’ve worked for a year as a volunteer in a disbled home, and am the next prospective volunteer for one of the projects.

I came across you site completely by chance and
again, thanks, thanks, thanks.

I am particularly interested in projects that involve helping children and orphans. Are there any places available within those sorts of projects? I was also wondering if there are fixed dates for the beginning of the work or I can decide them myself?
And what should I do once I’ve decided on a project?
Ciao, greetings from Germany

Hello Christine,

I’m very happy that you would like our assistance to volunteer in Ghana, and also that you managed to find the site through google.

In answer to your questions: there are still plenty of places, it even feels somewhat strange talking about free places in Ghana, since here things aren’t so regulated, there’s always the potential to find the work that suits you.

Similarly when you begin and finish the project is flexible here, in principle you can start and finish when you want, as long as you let me know.

If you’ve decided on a project, then just let me know, and get ready for the journey. Ideally you could also skype me so I could speak to you about Ghana.
Then you can book your flight, try and do this as early as possible, from BA, Emirates or whoever. Also get yourself a visa and a mosquito net.

See you soon,

Malte

Hey Malte,

Thanks for your Mail, it all sounds very promising…
I’ve spent some time reading your reports on the projects and looking at the photos, have started to look for a flight and also got in touch with Rouven.
So apart from the fact that I haven’t yet decided on a project, the rest is in motion.
Last query at this point is about the financial aspect…

I know it varies a lot, but approximately how much money do you need per month (including meals, accomodation, travelling..etc.)?

Ciao

P.S.

I’ve had a look through the open correspondences on your site, and was wondering if I could get Julia’s email from you? It’d be nice to speak to another prospective volunteer..

Hi Christine,

You’d need around 200 Ghana Cedis, 100 pounds, excluding meals and accommodation, per month for going out, travelling, taxis etc..
In addition then theres still the meals and accommodation.
Accommodation: 0-30 Ghana Cedis, 0-15 pounds. Depending on whether your project accommodates you.
Meals: 30-50 Ghana Cedis, 15-25 pounds.

Per month therefore you need about 230-300 Ghana Cedis, i.e. 115-150 pounds.
This is however probably the minimum, with nicer hotels and expensive restaurants you can spend much more, just as if you happen to fall in love with kente cloth or African masks..

Julia’s adress is: julia_87@gmx.at

Greetings
Malte
