  • Information and help for volunteering in Ghana.

After coming to Ghana as a volunteer I soon realised that most of the money I had paid to an organisation hadn't left England. In fact the disabled centre where I was working was losing money from having to pay for my meals and accomodation. I also realised how easy it is to volunteer in Ghana without any established organisation, which would allow you to spend the extra money on helping develop the project you are working on.

On this site you can find advice and help about going to volunteer in Ghana.

  • Notes:

Concerning the work:

The projects managers may have their own suggestions as to the various ways that volunteers can help. However it is important for the volunteer to pick out his/her own ways, using their individual strengths after having got a feel for how the project works.  Another thing to keep in mind is that once you do decide how you want to help, and your methods are likely to be different to those of the local project workers, it is important not to make them feel like the way they have been doing things is wrong.  Schools for example are usually very open and the volunteers are free in most cases to choose themselves how they wish to help, for example with French, English, maths, art, drama, sports, music, history etc..

Concerning the accommodation:

Since for each volunteer, individual accommodation must be looked for, we can’t say from the beginning exactly whether it will be in the project, in the proximity of the project, or in a host family.
Thus information should be regarded more as a likeliness than as a certainty, and the volunteer may well be housed in the project rather than a host family and vice versa.
